Why balanced skin ecosystem is the key to beautiful and healthy skin?

Our skin is its own ecosystem, home to diverse microorganisms, most of which are harmless or even beneficial to a healthy host. A single square centimeter of skin hosts approximately 1 billion microbes. The primary role of the skin is to serve as a physical barrier, protecting our bodies from potential assault by foreign organisms or toxic substances. The skin is also an interface with the outside environment and, as such, is colonized by a diverse collection of microorganisms — including bacteria, fungi and viruses — as well as mites.

According to Dr. Richard Gallo, chief of the dermatology division at the University of California, San Diego, “Good bacteria are educating your own skin cells to make your own antibiotics, and they produce their own antibiotics that kill off bad bacteria.” But modern life’s “hygienic” living--sanitizers, preservatives in our skin care and food, chemical exposure, antibiotics/pharmaceutical drug exposure and overuse--can drastically throw our microbiomes out of whack.

Our skin is naturally acidic with a pH of 4 to 5.5, creating comfort for beneficial bacteria, but it is an uncomfortable environment for the inhospitable or harmful ones. Alkaline, toxic chemicals and products that remove 99.9 percent of germs disrupt the natural acid pH balance of the skin, and disrupt the skin microbiome.

Just like our gastrointestinal tract, our skin microbiome deserves and requires our daily care and support. Consider the three important guidelines as following for protecting your skin flora.

maintaining a healthy skin microbiome:

1) Use lukewarm water.

Too-frequent showering, especially in hot water, not only removes lipids and oils that keep your skin from drying out, but also removes good bacteria.

2) Look at the shampoos and other personal care (and household cleaning) products you use.

Many beauty and personal care products contain harsh, synthetic chemicals that may disrupt your skin’s natural acid mantle, thus your natural ecosystem, particularly if you have a compromised immune system.

3) Use skin care brands that conduct in-depth research into skin bio-ecology and restore your skin microbiome.

There are brands out there really putting efforts into the research of skin bio-ecology. Professional skin and sun care brand Institut Esthederm founder Jean-Noël Thorel is a pioneer of research into skin flora and its ecosystem, microbiome. He developed an avant-garde bio-ecology technology and patents that respect the skin’s integrity provide it with constant protection against ageing, also the cellular science approach optimises its cellular metabolism, strengthen its ability to adapt and improve its resistance to environmental stressors to avoid the appearance of skin dysfunctions.

Jean-Noël Thorel achieved a new milestone when he discovered unique formulation water. Patented and inspired by the water in our skin, Cellular Water optimises cell energy, helps to protect their youthfulness and enhances the effectiveness of all of our products.

Maintaining or restoring beneficial bacteria is the answer to healthy skin and can give a powerful boost to our overall health and well-being.
